Just how good is this year’s Colorado Buffaloes basketball team?

That may be a legitimate question after the Buffs most recent win over Division II Fort Hays State. The Buffs won the game 81-71, but the fashion in which they won raises some questions for the rest of the season.

The Buffs charged out of the gate, jumping out to an 18-2 lead. At halftime, the score was 39-22. Colorado was handling the lesser foe as they should have. But in the second half, they let their guard down.

FHS never got within 10 points, but they did outplay Colorado in the second half, outscoring them by seven points. Rob Davis put up 29 points for the Tigers. That’s the most points any player has scored against Colorado this year.

Is it cause for concern, or should we be happy with the win?

Colorado got balanced scoring as Josh Fortune and Xavier Johnson each scored 15 points while Derrick White chipped in 10 more. Still, this is a team that the Buffs should have blown out, particularly at home.

The Pac-12 conference is loaded with good teams, starting with the undefeated UCLA Bruins. USC has yet to lose a game as well. The Buffs will also have to contend with Oregon, Arizona, California and Utah, which are all solid teams.

Conference play will be quite important this year, and he Buffs will have to leapfrog a couple of these schools. They can’t comfortably expect the selection committee to choose seven or eight schools from the conference in March and barring an incredible collapse, it looks like UCLA and USC will be two of their choices.

The Buffs improved their record to 8-3 on the season but they’ll face better teams than Fort Hays State and better players than Davis once conference play opens on January 1.

The Buffs travel to Colorado Springs to face Air Force (6-5) on Monday night.
