This season Colorado had one of the highest numbers for tight ends in the country. Unfortunately they did not utilize them at all. It could have been a huge strength and near impossible to defend, if coached right. In comes Clay Patterson the new tight ends and passing game coordinator for the University of Colorado. I for one could not be happier with this desperately needed new hire. There is so much talent in depth in this receiving core, especially where the tight ends are concerned. The Buffs finished the season only 270th in passing yards per game.

In 2018 Patterson joined the Minnesota Gophers coaching staff to coach the tight ends. He came from being head coach at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M for two seasons. In 2020 his Gopher tight ends caught two of Minnesota’s seven passing touchdowns and also blocked for their supreme rushing attacking.

Patterson hails from Morris Oklahoma. He has earned conference coach of the year honors. He also has experience being an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. So he knows what it takes to have an explosive offense and one that produces, unlike how the Buffs produced last season.
Patterson was also part of  Gophers team that brought in 5,616 yards in passing, the third most ever in school history and 3,293 of those yards were in passing.

Clay Patterson carries a bachelors degree in health, and human performance and recreation from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. As well as a master’s degree in education technology. Along with his impressive intelligence he brings a high octane performance experience everywhere he has coached.

Upon the hire here is what Coach Patterson had to say:

"“My wife Ashley and I are very thankful for Karl Dorrell and Rick George for the opportunity to come to Boulder and coach at the University of Colorado. Coach Dorrell is an outstanding football coach and man, I am very excited to work for and learn from him.  When the opportunity to continue to work with Mike Sanford and build an offense together came up, I was thrilled.  Mike is great to work with and he has an excellent offensive mind.”"

During his tenure at Minnesota the Gophers won three bowl games, and had a 30-16 record. He adopts a tight end core that a thirsty and ready to work hard. This is exactly the kind of hire I had been hoping for as I watched the tight ends being sidelined all season long. We all knew the talent and will to win what was there, but we never got to see it showcased. This is a great sign for fans and the tight ends for Colorado. Welcome to Boulder Coach Patterson!
