CU Buffs Football looking to hire Phil McGeoghan as receivers coach
By Shay McBryde
The Colorado Buffs are looking for a new wide receivers coach, and there eye has been on the former Los Angeles Chargers wide receivers coach Phil McGeoghan. He played in the NFL for four seasons, even though he went undrafted in 2001, he has played for the New York Jets, Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and New Orleans Saints. McGeoghan began his NFL with the Miami Dolphins. He was also the wide receivers coach for the Buffalo Bills in 2017, and had been with the Chargers from 2018-2020.
"”I’m a passionate person and a very demanding teacher. I like details and technique. There will be a standard that is very clear in that room, and we are going to hold each other to a high standard. We’ll have a lot of fun with a lot of energy and a lot of juice. But again, we will be detailed, disciplined, and we’ll play hard.””I’m a passionate person and a very demanding teacher. Those words are really music to the ear for any Buff fan. Last year was an abysmal year for offense, especially in the passing game. Even the more rare great passes thrown were followed by a lot of drops. They were the second to the lowest ranked offense in the Pac-12 just above Arizona. They ranked 270th in passing yards per game. That can’t happen if they want to have any kind of success in the Pac-12. Finishing at just a 4-8 record they honestly had an offense that could have done a lot worse. It was the Buffaloes defense that saved them in most games.
So many of their offensive weapons have entered the transfer portal. Brenden Rice could have been a bright star with a better coaching staff, but he is now gone. La’Vontae Shenault also took his talents elsewhere.
Phil has shaped some of the most talented receivers in the NFL, such as Keenan Allen. In 2018 and 2019 he had over 1200 yards of offense. Having any coach with this resume is a recipe for success. Head coach Karl Dorrell is doing a great job this off season of surrounding himself and his team around the right breed of coaches, to make this coaching staff and team successful. This would be a great hire for Colorado, one we all hope goes through.
