Former Colorado Buffaloes guard George King was named to USA Basketball Men’s World Cup Qualifying Team Wednesday afternoon, filling in as an injury replacement after Paul Watson Jr. suffered an injury in practice.
King committed to Tad Boyle and the University of Colorado on May 13, 2013 out of San Antionio, Texas and didn’t have composite ranking on 24/7 Sports.
The 6’5″ guard was a diamond in the rough for Boyle’s Buffs and explained why he chose CU.
"“I visited here like any other athlete would do and fell in love with Boulder. For me, it wasn’t a surprise at all. I knew where I wanted to go; that’s why I signed with the Colorado Buffaloes.”"
King played all-four years he was in Boulder, averaging 10.2 points on 44.4% shooting while adding 5.4 rebounds per game.
King was selected in the second round with the 59th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Phoenix Suns. King currently plays for the Los Angeles Clippers G-League affiliate Agua Caliente Clippers averaging 11.8 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 40% from the field and 81.5% from the charity stripe.
King is tied for tenth all-time in games played for Colorado with 127, fifth all-time in three-pointers made with 181, sixth all-time in three-point attempts with 451, tenth all-time in offensive rebounds with 183, and is seventh all-time in usage percentage at 23.1%.
Following his senior season, King was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team after averaging 12.9 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest.
Following Colorado’s loss to Arizona in the Pac-12 Tournament in 2018, King reflected on his time in Boulder.
"But it’s been a roller coaster journey for me, my five years here. I’m a Buff for life, and always will be. I’m looking forward to see the — I mean, the future of this program is in great hands. You see this guy right here on my left grow up in this tournament the last couple games before as well."
The person to the left he was referring to was McKinley Wright IV — he went on to have a pretty decent career I’d say.
Best of luck to King and Team USA!
