It was a Saturday night done right for the Colorado Buffaloes women’s basketball seniors. The team put on a show for the crowd and did right by the senior girls who have put in so many years of hard work and dedication for the squad. Not only did they beat a team they have failed to in 11 tries, they beat them powerfully by 15 points. Nobody expected the Buffs to sweep both Oregon teams to finish out the season. This was a statement win for Colorado heading into post season action.
It was the CU’s first 20 win season in nearly a decade. JR Payne’s squad has definitely had their woes late this season, but they are once again playing their best basketball and getting back to what made them phenomenal at the start of the year. The once lone undefeated team is coming into the Pac-12 Tournament on fire and at just the right time.
Head coach Payne said it was the first time in her career in Boulder she has shed some tears on Senior Day. Not because they haven’t had greatness in the past but because of what this team has been through together. To have the triumph at the end was beautiful. The win capped off all the hope and potential everybody knew this team had. They finished out the season in glory.
The Buffs will carry the high momentum on to Las Vegas on March 2nd where they will take on the Washington Huskies. The Huskies are the 12th seeded team with an overall record of 7-16 (2-13 in the Pac-12). Coming in last place in the Pac.
Colorado is the 5th seed coming in at 20-7 and now 9-7 in Pac-12 play. Their last meeting against the Huskies was a home game won in mighty fashion in a 66-43 victory. Mya Hollingshed and company was just too much for Washington to handle. The excitement of coming off huge victories to end the season is going to have the Buffs confidence on high. Head coach JR Payne knows what to expect and how to prepare for her teams first post season win. Tip off starts at 12 PM on the Pac 12 Network for round one of the tournament. Should CU go on to win they will face the No. 4 seeded Arizona Wildcats on Thursday.
