Colorado women’s basketball took a hard fall to Stanford in the semifinals of the Pac-12 tournament Friday evening. It was a tough task to try and win three days in a row. Even harder against the defending national champions. A team they have struggled to beat twice this year already, a third time just wasn’t the charm.
Colorado came in as the 5 seed against the 1 seed in the Stanford Cardinals. The Buffs had a hard time getting much offensive going the entire game. They were masterful at winning the the battle of the boards, unfortunately they did not do much with it.
Mya Hollingshed had a fabulous game in rebounding, but she couldn’t get much going offensively. Only scoring 7 points with 10 rebounds. Jaylyn Sherrod led all starters with 10 points. Freshman Kindyll Wetta was the main bright spot for Colorado. Her defense was outstanding and she did shine on offense with 12 points and 4 rebounds.
Only scoring into the mid 40’s is not going to be enough here on out. Their defense is one of the best in basketball at this point, but the lack of scoring is a concern for Colorado and head coach JR Payne. Payne was disappointed about the loss but happy with the rebounding effort. The Buffs had a total of 22 turnovers, they just gave Stanford way too many opportunities to score. With only a 30 percent field goal percentage, and 19 percent at three-point range they didn’t have much of a shot against the nations best.
CU will now rest and regroup. This is not the end of the line for them. A tough way to finish the Pac-12 tournament but there is much to be proud of from this group. This has been one of their most winningest seasons in years. They will now await to see where they will end up in the NCAA Tournament. Selection Sunday will be on March 13th at 6 p.m. on ESPN. As of right now the Buffs are ranked 28th in NET ranking. The herd will definitely be a Cinderella team to watch in the Big Dance. Let the madness begin.
