Colorado Football: Houston Gamblers take Forever Buff Drew Lewis in the USFL Supplemental Draft
By Shay McBryde
Forever Buff Drew Lewis is now a member of the new re-launched USFL team the Houston Gamblers. Selected as the third pick in the 31rst round of the draft.
If there’s one thing Texas is known for it’s football. Houston opened up the team in 1984 and closed it’s doors the following year. They made playoff appearances in both years, and won the Divisional Championship in 1984 before losing in the quarterfinals to Arizona. In 1985 they finished 3rd in the western division, losing in the quarterfinals again against Birmingham.
Drew Lewis comes from Sammamish, Washington. Say that three times over. A 6 foot two, 225 pound inside linebacker. He began his career with the Buffaloes in 2016 after transferring from junior college at Coffeyville.
In his junior season at Colorado he led the Buffs with a team high of 119 tackles. It was the second most tackles by a Colorado player in the last decade. Lewis had another productive season in his senior year, and has the capability to play inside and outside linebacker. When it was all said and done he finished in 78th on the Buffs all-time tackle record.
Drew signed with the Houston Texans back in 2019 as an undrafted free agent. A player who has sensational speed and maneuverability. He is highly talented on special teams as well, and can make an immediate impact for the Gamblers. To have a little throwback in history Drew Lewis’s father also played for the Houston Gamblers as well, and was a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks.
This Gambler is an alert and athletic third down receiver with lightening speed and quickness. His versatile ability is going to make a great impact on any squad. Lewis’s experience at both inside and outside linebacker is going to give him an edge on the field, and his special teams play is going to come in handy to get him more looks on the field.
Other Forever Buffs were Devin Ross to the Michigan Panthers in the late supplemental draft, and Delrick Abrams Jr. was selected by the Tampa Bay Bandits with the first pick of the cornerback round.
The USFL season will kick off on April 16th in Birmingham at 7:30 PM ET. It will be a 10 game season which you can watch on the Peacock Network.
