Colorado Football: Brendon Lewis standing out bright in early spring practice
By Shay McBryde
Last season from a blind eye there seemed to be a quarterback problem in Boulder. More intelligent minds knew there was a major problem with the offensive line and offensive game plan. With the new offensive coordinator Mike Sanford things are changing and in a big way.
Lewis finished last season with 1540 yards and 10 touchdowns. Running for 188 yards and had a rating of 118. He threw 3 interceptions all season. The 6 foot 2 Sophomore from Melissa, Texas is coming into 2022 with a point to prove. That last season was not his best and not the legacy he plans to leave for Colorado.
He is the first player to tell you what he did wrong, and how he can make it better. For him it was a learning experience and according to head coach Dorrell what everyone is seeing out of Lewis is a completely different player, in a completely different form.
According to Dorrell Brendon is a whole new Brendon from what everybody saw last season. He thinks the experience carried over for him. His confidence, toughness, and all around play is just better. Brendon is more of a leader in how he breaks and handles himself in huddles. He is off to an amazing start so far which gives fans and players so much hope for the upcoming season.
New offensive coordinator Mike Sanford seems to have the belief in his players already and they have the belief in him. The game play last season was a major struggle but just a few days in in spring practice the tide seems to be turning for Colorado.
There is a slew of quarterback competition for Lewis even though he is at the forefront. J.T. Shrout sophomore from Santa Clarita seems to still be second in command. Followed by Drew Carder, Freshman Maddox Kopp from Houston. James Mott sophomore from Laguna Beach, California. Pres Juarez freshman from Valley Village, California, and Zach Yanda a junior from Littleton, Colorado.
Whoever breaks through the helm at quarterback you can guarantee they are going to be the right man for the job. Mike Sanford is no newbie to the secret to success. Coming from Minnesota as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. A 17 year veteran to the sport. He has earlier remarked that this was his dream job and destination. Him and head coach Karl Dorrell have extreme respect for one another so you can bet that they are they are on the same page. The Big Ten is one of the most successful conferences in college football carrying that experience over to the Pac-12 is going to mean big things for Colorado.
There is a long road to go but so far there are promising things to look forward to in the quarterback position. With the right leadership in coaches and players this team could surely turn a few heads in the Pac-12, and it would be about time.
