Colorado Football: First spring scrimmage is in the books and Head coach Dorrell is pleased
By Shay McBryde
Head coach Karl Dorrell said he really liked the work from his players today. There are areas to work on but nothing major. Everybody got work today from walk-ons to starters. Defensively the guys played well and stopped the ball when they needed to. There were a few scores but the defense kept them out of the end zone the majority of the time.
Offensively Brandon Lewis looked good. He was in control offensively. Dorrell once again lit up when talked about Lewis. So far he looks to be the man to beat. He was impressed with the play of the tight ends who had some real nice catches. It was good progress after two weeks, but was a public scrimmage so coach Dorrell only showed just a touch. It was also thin in the backfield but Jayle Stacks proved to be impressive in his game with Alex Fontenot out.
The receiving core definitely had some big losses this off season for going into the portal. Players knew they had to step up this season to the fill the void. Senior Daniel Arias has already taken it upon his shoulders and shined in this first scrimmage. He caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Brendon Lewis. A great sign already from Arias.
Fellow wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig also had a great day. He caught an impressive sideline pass. RJ Sneed also put some good work in. Daniel Arias leaped high for a 44-yard near touchdown pass from Lewis which set the offense up at the 1-yard line. Deion Smith with on from there and plowed in for a 1-yard touchdown.
Dorrell was also very impressed with the play of the tight ends. He beamed when talking about Erik Olsen who had a nice catch and a first down. Olsen is one of the handful of players who have stuck out to head coach Dorrell since the start of spring training.
Freshman tight end out of Texas Austin Smith put his talents on display and caught a pass for a 19-yard gain from Drew Carter. We hope to see more of this big guy in the future. He did put in some work last season in punt returns and it was good to finally see him catch some balls.
Terrance Lang and Josh Wiggins both had a quality afternoon. Wiggins was looking confident and sharp at the start of his very young career. Lang knocked down one of Lewis’s passes behind the line of scrimmage. The sixth year senior looks to have a big final year for Colorado. Once quarterback turned safety Josh Woolverton made a friendly enemy out of Lewis today breaking up a big pass. Plays like these leave much to look forward to for the upcoming season. We will get to see Alex Fontenot and other in the next scrimmage who didn’t get a chance to play today. The confidence factor from Dorrell may be even higher by then.
