On Wednesday, May 18th the Pac-12 announced a change to the Football Championship Game format. There is now a change on how the league will determine the teams the qualify for the championship game. In 2022 the top two teams with the highest conference winning percentage will go head to head in the Championship. Had this been in effect in previous years 5 games would have had a different result in the last 11 years.

Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff spoke these words about the decision:

"“Our goal is to place our two best teams in our Pac-12 Football Championship Game, which we believe will provide our conference with the best opportunity to optimize CFP invitations and ultimately win national championships. Today’s decision is an important step towards that goal and immediately increases both fan interest in, and the media value of, our Football Championship Game.”"

The decision was supported by all FBS participants. The previous Championship game of No. 10 Oregon vs. No. 17 Utah would have been no change. However, the year prior which was No. 13 USC vs. what should have been a Washington team unable to play. Then replaced by Oregon would have never happened. USC would have taken on Colorado instead.

To simplify rather than seeing the winners of both the north and south division of the Pac-12 we will now see the two teams with the top winning percentages despite what division they come from. It will spread the league wide open and not allow any limitations to get to the big game. Showing off the best of the best regardless of where you come from. As all sports should be.
