Three Pac-12 teams came into Thursday’s Women’s College World Series opener representing the best in all of NCAAW softball. None of them came out on top in Day 1. The Big 12 by no surprise dominated the field. The only other conference to win a game was the Florida Gators out of the SEC conference. Today the Pac will have 3 more chances to keep their hopes alive.

The Pac-12’s hopes were large coming out of the gate. But the Texas Longhorns started it off by routing No. 5 UCLA in a 7-2 victory. Texas’s center fielder Bella Dayton and catcher Mary Iakopo hit home runs and had 4 RBI’s between them. Third baseman Mia Scott had 4 at bats and 4 hits, and batted in 2 runs for the Longhorns. Kinsley Washington and Delanie Wisz were the lone bright spots for UCLA. Wisz knocking in 2 RBI’s, and Washington one run off two hits. With the win Texas get’s an off day to rest and UCLA will play Northwestern in an elimination game at 7:00 p.m./4:00 p.m PT on ESPN 2.

The Arizona Wildcats battled tough with Oklahoma State but ultimately lost 4-2. Karli Petty was the star for Oklahoma State powering 1 home run and 3 RBI’s. Sharlize Palacios had 2 RBI’s off one hit and had a run for Arizona. They are now in the losers bracket and will face Oregon State on Friday on ESPN 2 where we will have a Pac-12 battle to see who moves on at 9:30 p.m/6:30 p.m. PT on ESPN2.

In a game of complete domination the Florida Gators took down Oregon State in a 7-1 victory. They will go on to face Arizona on a Friday night elimination game. Charla Echols was the offensive star of the show for the Gators. Avery Goelz added a whopping 3 RBI’s which really helped solidify Florida’s dominance. Florida will play Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Florida’s coach Tim Walton really emphasized you have to win that first game to really have a shot at competing for a National Championship. In history it’s been very hard to come back from a first loss. If any team could do it it would be UCLA. They have 12 National Championships under their belt. They know what it takes to be the best and beat the best. I expect them to come out on fire in their second game against Northwestern and give the Pac-12 a shot at more glory.
