Deion Sanders‘ mostly one-sided feud with Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables — one started when the latter called out the former’s recruiting style — was sarcastically referenced by Colorado football reporter Sean Keeler of the Denver Post (subscription required). Keeler joked (we think) that “Brent Venables aside, nobody with half a soul wishes Deion Sanders ill health.”

Venables started the coach-on-coach verbal jousting on July 17 when he called out Sanders by name for being dismissive of recruits who got to Boulder prior to his arrival — something the Sooners HC didn’t subscribe to himself.

“We’re another year in establishing our standards and our culture and our values,” Venables prefaced before saying, “That matters. A year ago, I challenged the guys. I wasn’t like Deion that gave guys a bunch of pink slips.”

Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders didn’t entertain Brent Venables’ shot

While many fell for a fake quote from Sanders that circulated in response to Venables’ call-out, Coach Prime’s actual response was that of neutrality and denial of such fake news that reached the web.

“Please read this slowly,” Sanders tweeted on July 18. “I’ve never responded to any of these great coaches that choose to target me or our program here @CUBuffsFootball. I’m great at walking & talking the talk & if it were truly me I would’ve referenced a LAMBORGHINI. That’s #CoachPrime.”

What had circulated on the internet was a more aggressive response from Sanders; one that took personal shots at Venables and the coaching job he has done in Norman since taking over for Lincoln Riley.

“First off, to the gentleman from Oklahoma, it’s ‘Coach’ to you,” the fake quote read. “There’s a saying about glass houses. We had roster turnover the way we did because we had to. If Coach (Venables) wants to talk, let’s talk. I wasn’t the one handed a Ferrari. Oklahoma is one of the best programs in the sport. When was the last time they won more than two games? The Ferrari’s crashed, and it’s smoking.”

That’s a good clap back for sure, but it didn’t come from “Prime Time.” Perhaps Venables shouldn’t continue pushing Sanders so he doesn’t see what the charismatic coach could come up with on his own.
