The only reason why Deion Sanders didn’t have a harsher response to Oklahoma’s Brent Venables, who criticized Coach Prime for being dismissive of his players, was because the first-year Colorado football head coach knows how badly things are going to play out for his Buffaloes — this, at least, according to Mike Farrell of Mike Farrell Sports, who answered “fact” when asked if Sanders’ response to the Sooners HC was perfect.

“A fake quote from Sanders about Venables’ random attack on how he’s purged his roster through the portal made the rounds with a reference to Venables being handed the keys to a Ferrari,” Farrell prefaced before saying, “But it was just that — fake. Instead, Sanders took the high road … Sanders loves to run his mouth at times, but he played this one correctly. Maybe he’s realizing what a disaster this season could be?” Sanders took a measured approach when responding to Venables and the fake quote.

“Please read this slowly,” Sanders prefaced before saying, “I’ve Never responded to any of these Great coaches that choose to target me or our program here (Colorado football). I’m Great at walking & talking the talk & if it were truly me I would’ve referenced a LAMBORGHINI. That’s #CoachPrime…”

Colorado football is the ultimate question mark ahead of the 2023 season

Typically, one could surmise that a team with a lot of new faces and few holdovers from the season before will result in a disastrous year, but Sanders brought in far more talent to Boulder than the previous coaches in the College Football Playoff ever did. This could be a TCU-adjacent case where a new head coach immediately elevates a new program whose resources have been misused.

It could also be the disaster that Farrell predicts. The current CU group didn’t even have their spring game to get reps in. Sanders’ health is a major question mark no matter how confidently he proclaims he’ll be running in lieu of Ralphie during Week 1 of the season.

Either way, Coach Prime can’t be too cartoonishly overconfident in the lead-up to his first Power Five season, or else run the risk of being ridiculed for the rest of time. And luckily, he hasn’t been thus far.
