Colorado football transfer Deion Smith told reporters during BYU’s first day of fall camp that he decided to make the move to Provo via the transfer portal in order to find “more consistency” after being part of a rebuild every year.

“Based on the trajectory of how things were going, I just felt like I wanted a little bit more consistency, because the program had been in a rebuild phase every year,” Smith said (h/t Deseret News). “I needed something a little bit more solidified.”

To be fair to Smith, he did have three different full-time head coaches (Mike MacIntyre, Mel Tucker, Karl Dorrell) and two interim head coaches (Kurt Roper, Mike Sanford) in Boulder before Coach Prime had even arrived. He sat out the 2020 season entirely and was never given 100 carries in a given campaign. It may not have ever worked out at CU for Smith and with the inbound transfers of Alton McCaskill IV and Kavosiey Smoke, the odds are that it wouldn’t have.

Colorado football transfer Deion Smith happy to be with BYU

Smith sounds happy with how things turned out since leaving the Colorado football program and joining BYU, claiming that it felt like the perfect place for him even though he didn’t know much about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which sponsors BYU.

“I never really knew much about the university or (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), never knew much about Provo,” Smith prefaced before saying, “So I took the visit and it was great, honestly. Once I got here everything was exactly what coaches said it would be. I just felt like this was the perfect place for me.”

From the sounds of it, Smith regrets ever going to CU at all…

“Honestly, I couldn’t be happier to be in blue,” Smith prefaced before saying, “I am surrounded by great people, great teammates, with a real family atmosphere. I wish I had come here sooner.”
