Colorado transfer sends diplomatic message on departure
Colorado football transfer wideout Montana Lemonious-Craig took a diplomatic route regarding his transfer from Boulder on August 4 during Arizona’s fall camp — with the Inglewood native claiming it was simply time for him to move on and gain experience at a different school.
“I felt like it was what was best for me and my future,” he said (h/t Arizona Desert Swarm). “I just felt like it was time for me to move on, go experience something new somewhere else.”
Lemonious-Craig progressively saw the Buffaloes get worse under Karl Dorrell during his three-year stint at CU. His first season having taken place in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic grants him an extra year of eligibility that the Wildcats could take advantage of.
Arizona coach feels Colorado football transfer has ‘great opportunity’ in desert
Lemonious-Craig’s new coach, Jedd Fisch, feels that the Colorado football transfer wideout has a “great opportunity” in Arizona’s offense considering the Wildcats’ run-and-gun tendencies.
“I think Montana felt there was a great opportunity with the way we throw the ball,” Fisch said. “You’re walking into a spot where, if you are the starter, you’re taking over for (66) catches and (1,105) yards. Traditionally guys that play that position in this offense … throughout the years, the Z receiver has traditionally had about 70 catches and has about 1,100 yards. So I think what he felt like hey, if I get there, there’s great production opportunity. We didn’t feel like we were worried about whether or not this guy’s gonna take six games to figure out what to do. Second thing is he’s tough. He was a guy that we saw could make plays on the one-on-one go ball, which was a spot that the Z receiver made for us. He was a guy that could break tackles when he caught quick screens and slants.”
Having made the most of Dorrell’s unimaginative offense, Lemonious-Craig has a chance to thrive as one of big-armed Wildcats QB Jayden de Laura’s weapons in Tuscon during the 2023 season and beyond.
