Deion Sanders was not going to let a group of reporters get him worried about the makeup of his Colorado football roster. As the Buffaloes’ fall camp opened, Coach Prime expressed zero concern with questions about CU’s depth.

“You’re talking about scholarship spots,” Sanders said (h/t On3). “How many people we got on the roster right now? 115. You think we’re needing more people? You can only, what, you can only travel with … 72. So that means there’s an extra 35 or whatever it is. … But yeah, shoot, we don’t need that.

“Why would we save those? Because we’re about to win, we’re about to really win and we’re going to need more recruits next year,” Sanders said. “Think about that. Forward-thinking. We can only put 11 on the field at a time. Think about that. Everything you come up with, we’ve thought out, man. I’m not new to this, man. I’m true to this. I’ve been doing this for a minute. I know you think I haven’t been at this level for a minute, but I’ve been in football for — how many years? A long time. Alright. I know what I’m doing.”

Deion Sanders’ Colorado football strategy got approval from most important people

Sanders’ way of doing things since arriving in Boulder last December may not make sense to some covering the sport, but it certainly did to a number of his coaching peers. The likes of Matt Rhule and Jake Dickert have admitted to wanting to build the program the same way Coach Prime has or, in Dicket’s case, already doing that.

Lincoln Riley, among the most accomplished head coaches in the Pac-12, has given Sanders his seal of approval as well.

That aforementioned support is living proof that Sanders has done an admirable job with the Buffs, but until the team wins on the field, there will continue to be a skeptical media conglomerate that is rooting against Coach Prime’s methods.
