Deion Sanders sent a stern message to the media about his expectations for his inaugural Colorado football squad for the 2023 season — seven times saying the phrase “we’re going to win.”

“To win, to win,” Deion Sanders said when asked directly what the expectation was for the Buffs in Year 1 of the “Prime Time” era (h/t On3). “That’s my expectation and we’re going to eclipse that. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. We’re going to win. I don’t know how to say that, wish I could say it in several different languages, but we’re going to win. To win, develop, get these guys to the next level, and help them to be men, not boys.”

It’s extremely likely that Coach Prime wasn’t aware of how many times he told the media his objective is to win with the Buffs, but let’s entertain that for a second. Are there seven wins to be had on the 2023 Colorado football schedule? TCU, Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Utah are certainly games one can assume as losses, leaving seven games that are at least winnable at first glance. Upsets happen in college football too, so those five aforementioned fanbases shouldn’t be counting their chickens before they hatch.

Deion Sanders addresses use of the transfer portal while heading up Colorado football

Sanders also discussed the transfer portal to reporters during the opening week of Colorado football fall camp, claiming that if it wasn’t his aggressive portal posturing, critics would simply find something else to criticize.

“Not whatsoever because it’s always been that way,” Sanders said. “Even when I was starting out in sports, I was the one that was not voted ‘Most Likely to Succeed.’ Undersized, this and that it was always a problem. It was always that … So I’m used to that, I’m accustomed to adversity and I’m accustomed to having an understanding of ridicule and disbelief.”

Coach Prime is right. When you do things a certain way and you’re unapologetic about it, critiques come like moths to a flame. Not a single media member’s opinion shows up in the standings by the season’s end, though, so no worries there.
