Top Colorado football stars Shedeur Sanders, the son of Coach Prime and starting quarterback, and CB/WR Travis Hunter, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2022 class, are not “typical FCS transfers” according to CBS Sports’ Will Backus.

“Hunter and Sanders are not typical FCS transfers,” Backus prefaced before saying, “Both were highly-regarded recruits out of high school — Hunter was the No. 1 prospect in the 2022 class and the first five-star to ever sign with an FCS program — that bought into Deion Sanders at Jackson State. They both followed Sanders to Colorado in the offseason. Hunter has the potential be either the best wide receiver or cornerback in the nation, while Sanders generated some Heisman Trophy buzz last season while throwing for 3,732 yards and 40 touchdowns.”

Hunter being given the designation of the best potential receiver, in addition to being projected as the top defensive back, is a bit of a surprise. There’s nothing surprising about the Sanders hype train, though, considering the hype he’s received for his development this summer.

Shedeur Sanders mastering Sean Lewis’ Colorado football offense

Former Kent State head coach Sean Lewis is in charge of re-shaping the Colorado football offense, and from the sounds of it, Sanders is mastering the Buffaloes’ offense — at least that’s what the quarterback said himself on August 3.

“I’d say right now I’m 80%,” Sanders said regarding his mastery of the offense. (h/t Adam Munsterteiger of BuffStampede). “I’d say I’m almost there. He (Lewis) has 12 years in the offense, I had a spring. So, coming back to it, meeting with him, we’re able to spend more time together. It means a lot, because I am starting to understand what he thinks and why he is calling certain stuff and his thought process and what to do in each situation that presents itself. So he’s given us all the answers to the problem, we just have to solve them. If we don’t, then it’s on us.”

With no tape for opposing coaching staffs to reference, the CU offense should be in a good position at the start of the season. While the 2022 Jackson State Tigers’ game film could be helpful, Sanders will have a far more robust supporting cast in Boulder.

That, and the fact that he would’ve been a Power Five QB two years ago had he not followed his father to Jackson, Mississippi, certainly supports the notion that Sanders isn’t a typical FCS transfer in any way.
