Analyst credits ‘allure’ of Coach Prime’s mentorship for elite CU position group
The “allure” of Deion Sanders has helped the Colorado football program build up a star-studded cornerback room — one that has the No. 1 CB and No. 1 overall 2022 recruit Travis Hunter, a Jackson State transfer, and the No. 1 cornerback in the 2023 class as well, Cormani McClain — according to Buffaloes Wire’s Tony Cosolo.
“Largely thanks to the allure of being mentored by a hall of fame head coach Deion Sanders, Colorado has added two five-star players and multiple others who could make a big impact this season,” Cosolo wrote. The Buffaloes Wire believes that this level of talent in the secondary has been absent for, at least, the last seven years.
“The Buffaloes’ talent at CB is the most they’ve had at the position since 2016 when they won the Pac-12 South. Three corners on that team were drafted into the NFL, but that number could be topped with this current group.”
Travis Hunter the ‘Louis’ in Coach Prime’s inbound Colorado football luggage
Coach Prime famously stated that he was bringing his luggage, specifically mentioning his “Louis Vuitton” as a way of saying it’s not insignificant luggage; but rather of the high-end, luxury variety. Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde included Hunter as one of his most intriguing non-quarterbacks in the 2023 college football season — and took it a step further by calling the ex-JSU Tiger the “Louis” Sanders was referring to.
“Hunter is definitely the Louis in Coach Prime’s Boulder luggage, and he’s not just trying to make the leap from FCS to high-major football; he’s doing it at two positions,” Forde wrote.
The big question, Forde claims, is how much lining up Hunter will do on both sides of the ball in Boulder.
“How much he plays on each side of the ball will be one of the primary curiosity factors of the early season,” Forde wrote.
That Power Five physicality will be different for Hunter, so it’s a definite TBD at the moment.
