Deion Sanders’ two sons, 21-year-old third-year quarterback Shedeur and 23-year-old fifth-year cornerback Shilo, have “guaranteed” starting jobs for Colorado football in 2023 according to OregonLive’s Joe Freeman.

“In the new era of college football, which is now shaped by the transfer portal and NIL, Sanders has approached rebuilding a downtrodden program in a way that no one has in the storied history of the sport,” Freeman prefaced before saying, “The Buffaloes feature nearly 70 new scholarship players — and just 10 holdover scholarship players from last season — and his sons have been guaranteed starting jobs, including quarterback Shedeur Sanders.”

This is news considering previous reporting had pointed to Shilo having no guaranteed starting job. While Coach Prime himself ordained Shedeur the Buffs’ QB1, there was never a similar promise made about Shilo in the secondary.

Reporter believes Colorado football safety position up for grabs: ‘May the best men win’

247Sports’ Adam Munsterteiger had painted the picture that the safety position was one that was entirely up for grabs for the eight guys in contention for a starting spot.

“All of the scholarship safeties on Colorado’s roster, sans true freshman Jaden Milliner-Jones, have started at the college level,” Munsterteiger prefaced before saying, “So, defensive coordinator and safeties coach Charles Kelly is faced with a good problem. It is especially good to have the problem at safety, where injuries can mount up, and at a position where targeting issues can factor in. Shilo Sanders, Trevor Woods, Cam’Ron Silmon-Craig, Myles Slusher, Rodrick Ward, Travis Jay and Vito Tisdale all came to Boulder to start. Even Alabama transfer Jahquez Robinson could factor in at safety. May the best men win.”

It’s certainly within reason that Shilo would, and perhaps should, start for CU in 2023, but that simply hasn’t been announced as a matter of fact yet. In fact, would anyone be shocked if Coach Prime didn’t start his son to set an example?

This writer wouldn’t.
