Deion Sanders dialed up the hype for the leading receiver in the country in yardage, Colorado football WR Xavier Weaver, after the USF transfer’s 10-catch, 170-yard, one-touchdown showing against Nebraska in a dominant 36-14 win for the Buffs.

“The stuff you see on the field, I see in practice — Xavier is a dawg, the kid loves football,” Coach Prime prefaced before saying, “You’re going to see a season filled with this, he loves to compete.” Wildly enough, Weaver was unimpressed with the showing from the Buffaloes offense.

“We wanted to run it up, we didn’t even do what we were supposed to do,” Weaver said. “We didn’t do what we were supposed to do yet. I can’t put a grade on us. We got high standards, we set it at 500 yards in the air, so 300 isn’t going to cut it. We have too many weapons at once. It’s hard for teams to stop us. Once it started rolling, we didn’t stop.”

Xavier Weaver could help Colorado football teammate win Heisman trophy

For the second straight week, the Heisman hype is strong for Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders; though with the caveat of Colorado football actually needing to win games for that to happen.

“Being in the Heisman discussion early in the year requires outstanding individual performances, and Sanders has done that through two weeks,” CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson prefaced before saying, “But, remaining in the discussion throughout the year requires team success as well. The betting market will reflect an improvement in Sanders’ odds to win the award, but history has shown that stats without wins is not a path to claiming the stiff-arm trophy. Colorado needs Sanders to be at his best in order to win, and Sanders needs Colorado to win in order to hold his spot in the Heisman Trophy race.”

Weaver, by virtue of being Sanders’ top weapon in an offense that doesn’t appear to be likely to get much help from the RB room, is one of CU’s best chances of winning every week. As someone who can make a spectacular grab and use his feet to commit similarly spectacular feats, Weaver is a star that the Buffs need to play like one every week to secure Shedeur as a Heisman candidate.
