FOX Sports analyst and former Colorado football star Joel Klatt knows one thing for sure: Deion Sanders doesn’t want any part of the NFL. Something he doesn’t know for sure, though, that is a little worrying is whether or not Coach Prime is long for the Rocky Mountains.

“He’s not going to the NFL,” Klatt told Colin Cowherd during the September 13 edition of The Herd. “I don’t know if he’s gonna be at Colorado for sure (going forward), but I can tell you for sure, he’s not going to the NFL.”

So much for the several suggested landing spots this writer made for Coach Prime in order to follow his son Shedeur to the NFL level. If Sanders’ youngest son ends up pursuing his NFL dream after two years at Jackson State and a year in Boulder, it’s possible Coach Prime will stick around for Travis Hunter and the stacked transfer class he brought in. He’s also in on 2025 targets, indicating a level of interest in sticking around Northern Colorado for the long haul.

Marquee programs could look to poach Deion Sanders from Colorado football

What’s working against the long-term prospects of Sanders in Boulder is the exact reason Colorado football is a legitimate threat in 2023: the transfer portal. If another program comes calling with more potential, resources, and most of all, money to give, Coach Prime could be as good as gone at any time.

And those programs will come calling. One that seems like a natural fit is Alabama; who could lose Nick Saban sooner than later with the dynasty seemingly on the decline. Sanders recently shared his pride for being an HBCU graduate at nearby Talladega College and could be the only star big enough to replace Saban in Tuscaloosa.

Florida could come calling, even if Hail Florida Hail’s Benjamin Henderson doesn’t want any part of a Coach Prime-Gators union. If/when Texas A&M lets go of Jimbo Fisher, the former Dallas Cowboys star Sanders could make sense in the Lone Star State.

Sanders is a commodity, and if they plan on keeping Coach Prime, Colorado football will have to pay him like someone they can’t lose.

Because they can’t.
