Offseason Nebraska flip Omarion Miller was the necessary spark for Colorado football — in his collegiate debut no less — during a near-comeback victory for the Buffs that was ultimately a 48-41 USC win in Boulder.

After amassing 196 receiving yards and a touchdown against a Trojans defense that seemingly couldn’t handle the effort Shedeur Sanders and Co. were showing in mounting the second-half comeback down 20 at halftime, Miller was named by On3’s Charles Power as one of the true freshman standouts of Week 5.

“Looking for a spark down 41-14 to No. 8 USC, Deion Sanders and Colorado turned to true freshman wide receiver Omarion Miller,” Power prefaced before saying, “The Vivian (La.) North Caddo product delivered in a huge way, helping ignite a furious comeback attempt that ended in a 48-41 loss. Miller finished the day with seven catches for 196 yards and a touchdown. To make the gaudy stat line even more impressive, Miller did all of that in the second half. The 6-foot-1.5, 195-pounder won in about every way possible. He showed outstanding concentration in tracking the ball over his shoulder. We later saw him make a diving grab for a touchdown. Miller also proved to be strong after the catch, getting upfield quickly. The routes and technical savvy were also impressive.”

Omarion Miller gives Colorado football strong depth in the receiving corps

Miller’s near-200-yard outing on September 30 gives Colorado football yet another receiver who could be “that guy” during any given week. Xavier Weaver has been “that guy” for all but two games this season, while Travis Hunter was the leading receiver (11 catches for 119 yards) in Week 1, co-owning that role with running back Dylan Edwards, who had the most receiving yards (135) and touchdowns (three) of any of Shedeur Sanders’s weapons. Jimmy Horn Jr. is due for his day leading the offense after frequently finishing near the top of the Buffs’ receiving yardage leaderboard every week as well.

Miller is the icing on top of Colorado’s passing game cake and is a freshman worth watching as the season progresses and injuries to the top of the depth chart inevitably come.

Week 5 saw Miller and fellow freshman Cormani McClain breakout for the Buffs. Hopefully, that’s only the beginning of the star-making Coach Prime has planned for 2023.
