‘Remains to be seen’ if Coach Prime continues popping Colorado’s ratings

Colorado football has had the most-watched game of the season — unfortunately, their 42-6 blowout loss to Oregon –, two of the three most-watched games, and five of the top 10 most-watched overall — but Footballscoop’s Zach Barnett isn’t convinced Coach Prime could keep the eyes glued on the Buffs considering the mounting losses, most notably against Stanford on October 13, following that unfortunate day in Eugene.

“It remains to be seen how enduring Deion Sanders’s brand will remain now that: A) the new-ness has worn off, B) Colorado is struggling on the field, and C) the Buffs’ schedule is not as enticing, particularly as the Playoff race takes over and competition picks up elsewhere,” Barnett wrote. “Colorado’s collapse against Stanford drew 3.29 million, still a huge audience for a Friday night game but also the smallest Nielsen-tracked audience of the season.”

Being out of the conference title picture will most certainly ding the Buffs’ ratings late in the season, as will the likelihood that the teams closest to the Pac-12 championship, mainly Oregon and Washington, are not on CU’s future slate.

Big Ten set to make Colorado football irrelevant

Now that Colorado isn’t a factor in the College Football Playoff race, the Big Ten, as Barnett explains, is the conference to watch considering the possibility it could have two teams in the field for the second straight year based on what we’ve seen through Week 7.

“The Big Ten figures to be a major factor down the stretch,” Barnett prefaced before saying, “The conference’s three biggest brands are all undefeated and ranked among the top 10, and all have yet to play each other. The battle for the final Big Ten East championship begins Saturday with No. 7 Penn State at No. 3 Ohio State. Penn State hosts No. 2 Michigan on Nov. 11, and Michigan hosts Ohio State on Nov. 25. All three games will air in Fox’s Big Noon Kickoff window.”

CU had its time in the sun, and it will likely have a similar time sometime soon. While the Buffs won’t be the most-watched team like they were in September, they’ll have a far wider audience than they ever did before Coach Prime touched down in Boulder.
