Top Colorado transfer wideout’s breakout ‘not a surprise’
Top Colorado football transfer wideout Xavier Weaver’s breakout season with the Buffs is “not surprising” according to BuffZone’s Brian Howell — who detailed how No. 10 set the stage for himself to be Shedeur Sanders’ No. 1 option.
“Weaver standing out isn’t a surprise…Prior to joining the Buffs this summer, Weaver starred at South Florida, leading the Bulls in receiving last season with 53 catches for 718 yards,” Howell prefaced before saying, “In his four seasons at USF, Weaver caught 116 passes for 1,735 yards and eight touchdowns.
“He knew Sanders would throw the ball a lot, which meant he could have a lot of opportunities to catch passes. In the offseason, Weaver spent time building a rapport with Sanders and he’s become perhaps Sanders’ most reliable weapon.”
Colorado football transfer Xavier Weaver called his shot prior to 2023 season
Weaver predicted his success during fall camp, projecting a 1K-rushing yard campaign; which he is thus far on the way to doing should he stay healthy the rest of the way, with 631 yards through seven appearances.
“I feel like this is a big chance for all of us,” Weaver said (h/t Denver Gazette). “We’re all going to throw up 1,000 (yards). It’s just a big opportunity. I feel like all eyes are on us. I feel like I’ve been under the radar for a little bit, so this is the right time to prove myself.”
Shedeur called it too.
“He’s going to have a big year,” Sanders said. “I feel like all the receivers understand what’s at stake, what’s the plan (and) what we’re trying to accomplish this year.”
Weaver, dubbed the best CU player not named Shedeur, has played as big of a role as possible for the Buffs thus far in 2023. With no eligibility left, though, this spectacular season serves as both an introduction and a swan song to the Buffs faithful.
