Colorado football career rushing leader No. 9: James Mayberry 1975-78

  • 2,544 rushing yards
  • 25 rushing touchdowns
  • 4.7 yards per rush

In the 70s, the Colorado Buffaloes finally found consistent success on the football field, first under Eddie Crowder, then under head coach Bill Mallory. Mallory took over in 1974 and James Mayberry arrived in 1975.

Mayberry was quiet in his first two seasons, but as a junior he dominated the Big 8 Conference, finishing third in the conference in rushing yards with 1,299. That was good enough for ninth in the entire country.

As a senior in 1978, Mayberry rushed for just 920 yards but reached 1,000 scrimmage yards again. In the Spring of 1979 he was selected in the third round of the NFL draft by the Atlanta Falcons.
