Colorado football career passing leader No. 2: Steven Montez (2015-19)

  • 9,710 passing yards
  • 63 passing touchdowns
  • 62.4% completion
  • 7.4 yards per attempt

Long gone are the days of the triple-option at Colorado. By about 2013 when Mike MacIntyre took over as the head coach of the Buffs, Colorado was all about throwing the ball around in the thin Colorado air. Steven Montez benefited greatly from that philosophy even though he ended his career in Mel Tucker’s one season as head coach.

Montez didn’t play as a freshman, but played in Year 2 and barely got over 1,000 passing yards in nine games. Then in 2017 He grabbed the reins of the offense and ripped off three straight seasons with at least 2,800 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns.

Adding in his rushing yardage, he was accounting for over 3,000 yards of offense for an impressive three-year stretch, but the team went exactly 5-7 all three years.
