Army defeated a soon-to-be-formerly-ranked Air Force on November 4 at Mile High because of the inspiration they got from an unlikely source during game week: Colorado football head coach Deion Sanders. As BuffsBeat’s Brian Schaible put it, Coach Prime gave the Black Knights “Prime” energy — not to be confused with Logan Paul’s energy drink — ahead of the 23-3 wire-to-wire win.
“Army coach Jeff Monken has been struggling all season,” Schaible prefaced before saying, “His squad was coming off five straight losses, including shutouts to LSU and Troy. This team was on the ropes and needed a spark. They needed someone to lift their spirits and give hope where there’s been nothing but hopelessness. Well, it seems they found that inspiration in Boulder.
“Monken and the Black Knights spent the days leading up to the game with Deion Sanders and practiced at the base of the Flatirons. These gentlemen won’t back down on the battlefield and they’re certainly not going to give up on the gridiron. But like any team that faces adversity, sometimes you need that outside voice to help provide that bit of extra motivation. This time, that boost came from Coach Prime.”
Air Force loses after The Denver Post called out Coach Prime and Colorado football by claiming Falcons only ‘miracle workers’
After The Denver Post’s Mark Kiszla penned a piece (subscription required) titled, “Kiszla: Sorry, Coach Prime. But the real football miracle worker in Colorado is Troy Calhoun,” there was a degree of F’ing around and finding out that would soon follow.
There should be no bad blood between CU and the United States Air Force Academy, but wouldn’t you know it, a media talking head is aiming to do it.
Air Force was a pretender in the first College Football Playoff rankings release, but the Falcons are still a team worth cheering for. Don’t let there be any in-state rivalry besides the one Jay Norvell begged for when he poked the bear ahead of the 2023 Rocky Mountain Showdown.
