The possibility of Colorado football co-offensive coordinator Sean Lewis — who was demoted on November 3 when his play-calling duties were stripped and re-assigned to Pat Shurmur — jumping to Michigan State to fill the vacated head coaching role has “intensified” according to BuffsBeat’s Josh Tolle.

“While this isn’t news for anyone paying attention to the rumors, (Lewis to Michigan State) has intensified with CU’s offensive mastermind being demoted this past week,” Tolle prefaced before saying, “Deion Sanders took play-calling duties away from Lewis and elevated former NFL coach Pat Shurmur from an outside analyst to co-offensive coordinator.”

Of course, Lewis would be the second straight ex-Colorado coordinator to be hired by Michigan State — with former defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who was officially fired on September 27 for alleged sexual harassment towards a hired speaker, being the one whose dismissal opened up the job in East Lansing.

Possible reason for Sean Lewis’ demotion from play-calling for Colorado football

ESPN’s Bill Connelly tried to guess what was the cause for Lewis’ play-calling, and what he landed on doesn’t sound too far-fetched: Coach Prime may have ditched the former Kent State head coach because he wasn’t leaning on Shedeur Sanders enough.

“My completely unfounded but enjoyable (to me) theory: Lewis actually wanted to run the ball more than like 4 times per game but got yelled at anytime he took the ball out of Shedeur’s hands,” tweeted Connelly.

Shedeur was a seemingly obvious factor in Lewis’ demotion. Coach Prime cannot have been happy in the slightest to have watched his son get sacked more than anyone in the country, prompting the drastic decision to switch things up.

Unfortunately, Sanders still took four sacks against Oregon State on November 4. But you can’t fault Coach Prime for not trying to protect his son and allow him the chance to be a miracle worker under center.
