Former Clemson linebacker-turned-CU Buff LaVonta Bentley had a message for anyone in the transfer portal who may have an interest in Coach Prime’s Colorado football program: “Don’t get the big head, stay the course.”

“Just put the work in,” Bentley said when asked at a November 21 presser what he would tell a player transferring into CU’s program next year (h/t 247Sports’ Adam Munsterteiger). “Don’t get the big head. When things don’t go your way, stay the course. That’s really it.”

Coach Prime’s own message matched up with Bentley’s. Deion Sanders claimed he only wants players who want Colorado; not those looking to wrap the Buffs into a bidding war for any recruit’s services.

“Philosophy going into recruiting… we want players that want us,” Sanders said. “Trying to convince somebody or being held hostage financially, we’re not into that.”

Colorado football not rewarding talented players with the wrong attitude

Some of Colorado’s most talented newcomers, like Cormani McClain and Juwan Mitchell, didn’t see the field as much as they would’ve liked due to off-field issues.

“Study, prepare, be on time for meetings, show up to the darn meetings… Understand what we’re doing as a scheme,” Sanders told reporters on September 26 when asked what McClain could do to get on the field. “Want to play this game… Desire to play this game. Desire to be the best in this game– at practice, in the film room and in your own free time.”

When answering about Mitchell’s absence against Stanford on October 13 during CU’s most unfathomable loss of the season, Coach Prime was brief but hinted that it had to do with Mitchell’s off-field behavior.

“Ask him what happened,” Sanders said. “Next guy.”

With the cameras rolling all season, we’ll soon have more context to understand what Coach Prime’s standards are in the locker room. We probably won’t hear much from the McClain or Mitchell sides, though.
