Shedeur Sanders returning to the Colorado football program in 2024 was deemed a risky proposition for the quarterback’s NFL hopes by Buffaloes Wire’s Matt Wadleigh — who sees No. 2 already having a professional-quality resume from his one season in Boulder.

“The numbers are certainly there for Shedeur (to be in the NFL): He has thrown for 3,230 yards with 27 touchdowns and just three interceptions, but he has been sacked 48 times and has been known to hold on to the ball too long at times,” Wadleigh prefaced before saying, “There is a lot of risk for him returning to Colorado for another year, although Coach Prime has made it clear he wants to fix the offensive line issues.

“Whether or not Shedeur enters remains to be seen, but it will be a major talking point over the next few weeks.”

Wadleigh is a Colorado source who believes that. He was sharing that opinion in a piece fully backing a pro-Shedeur-to-the-NFL-ASAP assessment from Draft Wire’s Natalie Miller; which took it a step further and chillingly referred to a potential return to Boulder as a “career-altering move.”

“There is so much at risk should Sanders opt to stay in Colorado and it could be a legitimately career-altering movie,” Miller wrote. “It’s unlikely Colorado will be able to turn the offensive line around in a single season and the top weapons in the country are not going to come to Boulder anytime soon. Sanders should seriously consider flexing the talent showcase he put on this year and enter the 2024 draft as one of the premier prospects and avoid a potentially career-altering injury of production change should he stay with the Buffaloes.”

Shedeur Sanders can help his father’s legacy by staying with Colorado football for one more year

On a personal level, Shedeur returning to Boulder in 2024 is something that could end up being more fulfilling for Coach Prime’s youngest son. With the Buffs Big 12-bound, the competition will decrease, but CU is not equipped to replace Shedeur just yet based on anything they’ve done on the recruiting trail.

Antwann Hill is coming in 2025, and Bryce Underwood could join him. But in 2024, there’s only the current QB room — which, let’s be honest, may not be fully intact by the spring game — and incoming 3-star Danny O’Neil, who’d be thrown into the fire in a non-ideal situation for CU.

Shedeur doesn’t need to stay one more year, and perhaps Wadleigh and Miller are correct in their assessment that he shouldn’t.

But doing so would be doing his pops a solid.
