Mike Farrell Sports’ Scott Salomon accused Coach Prime of “playing hypocrite” regarding his recent plea to boosters and alumni to donate in an effort to help him and his Colorado football coaching staff land recruits; this in the wake of criticisms of recruits focusing on NIL payouts.

“After saying that Colorado would not enter into protracted NIL negotiations with top talent coming out in 2024 and that players would only earn money by working hard and making it to the NFL, Deion Sanders played hypocrite late Saturday night when he asked Buffs donors to open their wallets so that he and his staff could compete financially to sign big-named recruits,” Salomon wrote.

Coach Prime had recently exclaimed that Colorado “is not an ATM” in a message to recruits that NIL is not the primary draw of playing in Boulder.

“We’re not an ATM — that’s not going to happen here,” Sanders said on November 21. “If you come to Colorado to play football for me and the Colorado Buffaloes, it’s because you really want to play football and receive a wonderful education, and all the business stuff will be handled on the back end if that’s the case. But we are not an ATM.”

Coach Prime potentially scaring off Colorado football recruits with comments

Since Coach Prime shared his stance on how Colorado views recruiting, the already-landed commits started leaving the program in droves. Two quarterbacks (Antwann Hill Jr., Danny O’Neil), offensive lineman Talan Chandler, and wideout Winston Watkins Jr. have all fled, and the floodgates could continue to remain open as recruits figure out what Deion Sanders’ goals in Boulder are.

The odds are high that Coach Prime’s primary focus is making the Buffs a winner in Shedeur, Shilo, and Travis Hunter’s final season, so 2024 and 2025 recruits must not be too confident in Sanders staying in Colorado beyond next season.
