Byron Leftwich’s connection to Tom Brady, whom Colorado football quarterback Shedeur Sanders has a kinship with, could lead to the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator taking the same job in Boulder.

“Being Tom Brady’s former offensive coordinator could help (Leftwich’s) cause knowing Sanders is deeply involved with the NFL GOAT,” BuffsBeat’s Josh Tolle wrote. “Also, being a former quarterback himself could pay off big dividends as he knows what goes on as a QB and could bring more rapport in CU’s QB room. Leftwich worked under Bruce Arians as well who was a coach that was more than willing to air the ball out. Not to mention, Leftwich has been on the sideline in Boulder for games this year.”

With that said, the presence of Pat Shurmur and the familiarity of keeping him as offensive coordinator could be the biggest roadblock to Leftwich getting the nod as the University of Colorado’s lead play-caller in 2024.

“Both have NFL pedigree and Shurmur already has familiarity with the team and it would not be as drastic of a change,” Tolle prefaced before saying, “But under Shurmur CU did see their points and total yards go down and the Buffs were not able to make an impact in the run game or protecting Shedeur Sanders. The familiarity could be key in keeping Shurmur as OC. This would allow him to bring in more of the style of offense he wants to run with three receivers and a tight end that is used more on the line.”

Colorado football cannot pass up Byron Leftwich for Pat Shurmur

Coach Prime could make a lot of enemies in Boulder by keeping Shurmur and passing on Leftwich. Luckily, the odds are high that Deion Sanders is going to revamp his coaching staff and lean heavily on the NFL star power of the incoming hires.

Warren Sapp is already joining the Buffs staff on the defensive side, so don’t be shocked to see guys like Leftwich hired to bring that level of familiarity — and bring out the fandom — for and of recruits and their families on the other side of the ball.
