Many on X were up in arms about Coach Prime “most likely,” in his words, retaining Pat Shurmur as his Colorado football program’s lead play-caller in 2024.

“Colorado HC Deion Sanders did an interview with USA Today,” BuffZone’s Brian Howell prefaced on December 4 before saying, “He said Pat Shurmur will “most likely” be the Buffaloes’ offensive coordinator in 2024.”

Like I said, fans were not happy.

“So instead of a young, offensive genius who will recruit they’re going to stick with a retread old guy with no energy who sucks at calling plays? Awesome,” wrote one sarcastic poster who’s dealing with disappointment with dark humor.

“Damn, all my excitement for next year is gone — he is going to ruin Shedeur’s draft stock,” remarked another.

“How is Shurmur the best guy available? This likely won’t end well,” another prefaced before saying, “Hope I’m wrong but…yikes.”

“Going to revise my prediction for next year from 7 wins to 5,” said one anti-Shurmur poster. “I see another year of passing on every down.”

“Deon doesn’t have time to work on CU football hiring coaches,” said one Coach Prime hater. “He is busy taking Shedeur to Cowboys games, Lakers games, Nugget games, accepting his participation award from SI. Giving interviews. He is a busy guy.”

Pat Shurmur in an unenviable position on Coach Prime’s Colorado football staff

What was made evident by Sean Lewis’s demotion mid-way through his first, and as it turns out only, season as the Buffs’ offensive coordinator, was that if his son Shedeur is suffering from the lack of execution around him, the play-caller isn’t safe.

Shurmur may simply be the next fall guy who’d be cut mid-season if Colorado isn’t winning. Who else is added on the offensive side of the ball, with the losses of Tim Brewster, Bill O’Boyle (more than likely), and perhaps others, will be important to watch if another in-season coaching shakeup happens in 2024.
