Rivalries are what make any sport great, especially college football. Some rivals are made even better when the opposing head coach makes things worse with interviews and things said both before and after games. Some fan bases have coaches they simply just can't stand, and everyone plays into it.
Colorado has their fair share of rivalries, especially with a coach like Deion Sanders. Sanders has certainly ruffled some feathers since stepping into the head coaching game, starting back at Jackson State and now at Colorado. However, he isn't the only coach to have rubbed some people the wrong way.
Some coaches from back when Colorado was in the Pac-12 have certainly frustrated the Colorado fan base. So here are three current head football coaches that Buffaloes fans love to hate.
Lincoln Riley
This hatred goes back to the days when Colorado and USC both played in the Pac-12, but now the Buffalos are in the Big 12 and the Trojans are in the Big Ten, but that doesn't stop the hatred of head coach Lincoln Riley. When both teams were in the same conference, the battle between USC and Colorado over recruits was a big one, and Riley always had a pretentious attitude toward the Buffs.
Even though these teams are in different conferences now, Colorado's hatred of Riley still runs deep, and if these teams meet again while Riley is coaching the Trojans, fans will love to hate on him again during the game.
Dan Lanning
Dan Lanning really got under the skin of Colorado fans back in 2023 when he made a comment about playing the Buffaloes, saying that the Ducks were fighting for wins while Colorado was fighting for clicks. This was back when the newness of Sanders was still predominant, and anything the star former NFL player did went viral.
Ever since those comments, Buffalo's fans have just really had a hatred towards Lanning, even though both teams are now in new conferences.
Matt Rhule
Colorado and Nebraska played each other in the 2024 season, the Buffaloes' first season in the Big 12. Both teams were undefeated at this time, and it was considered one of the bigger games in the early part of the season.
The Cornhuskers ended up walking away with the 28-10 win over the Buffaloes, but this rivalry doesn't just have to do with Rhule. The rivalry between Nebraska and Colorado dates back to when both teams were in the Big Eight/Big 12 before both teams made a split for different conferences.
