It’s easy to keep up with Colorado’s biggest stars in the NFL—guys like Laviska Shenault and Christian Gonzalez. But what about some of the lesser-known Buffs who are still grinding at the next level? Here are three former CU players you might have forgotten are still chasing their pro dreams.

Will Sherman, OL – Denver Broncos

Sherman was a reliable piece of Colorado’s offensive line from 2018 to 2020, earning All-Pac-12 honors before being drafted in the sixth round by the New England Patriots in 2021. He appeared in one game for New England before joining the Denver Broncos in 2022. He spent time on Denver’s practice squad and active roster, appearing in six special teams snaps. Now in his fifth year, he’s looking to carve out a more permanent role with the Broncos.

Derrick McLendon II, OLB – Miami Dolphins

McLendon played just one season in Boulder in 2023 after transferring from Florida State, but he made an impact, recording 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks in a rotational role. He went undrafted but landed with the Miami Dolphins, where he’s fighting for a spot on their pass-rushing depth chart. Given his size (6-4, 250) and athleticism, don’t be surprised if he sticks around.

Brady Russell, TE – Seattle Seahawks

Russell was my favorite during my time as a student in Boulder. He was known for his toughness and versatility. After starting as a walk-on, Russell had a productive college career from 2017 to 2022, signing with the Philadelphia Eagles as an undrafted free agent. He’s since bounced around practice squads but is currently with the Seattle Seahawks, hoping to earn reps as a blocking tight end.

They may not be household names, but these former Buffs are still representing Colorado at the highest level.
