Legendary Colorado QB Kordell Stewart is looking to make a return to The Centennial State. He just might be wearing different colors.

According to a report from Yahoo.com, Stewart is apparently making a push for the vacant head coaching position at Colorado State, the biggest rival of the Buffaloes.

Yahoo cites a report from Josina Anderson, who communicated via social media that Stewart was looking to break into coaching and had interest in the vacant job at Colorado State:

Earlier in the season, Colorado State let go of head coach Jay Norvell, who had produced just an 18-26 overall record in 3.5 seasons.

As fun as it would be to see the electrifying former Colorado QB back in college football, fans would have mixed feelings seeing him wear that heinous green.

Colorado and Colorado State aren't currently scheduled to meet again on the gridiron until 2029, but they have met 95 times previously. That included every season between 1995-2019 until a four-year hiatus. Deion Sanders led the Buffaloes to back-to-back victories over the Rams in 2023 and 2024. Colorado has won the last seven meetings between the two.

Kordell Stewart as Colorado State's head coach would be tough to stomach

Stewart starred at Colorado for three seasons as the starter between 1992-1994. He led Colorado to the No. 3 overall ranking in 1994 and was a 2nd team All-American. He went on to be selected in the second round of the 1995 NFL Draft and had a 10-year pro career before retiring in 2005.

Stewart's most memorable moment - at least nationally - was the Hail Mary pass to beat Michigan in the Big House in 1994.

Stewart should have his jersey retired at Colorado. He was one of the first names brought up by fans when the school announced the retirement of the jersey numbers of Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders. Hunter, as a Heisman winner, made sense. But retiring Sanders' jersey before Stewart's rubbed a lot of people in Boulder the wrong way.

Perhaps it rubbed Stewart the wrong way, too, and that's led to his interest in the Colorado State vacancy. He's a Buffs legend, but it would be hard to cheer for him as a fan of the Rams, even if the "rivalry" isn't much of one anymore with the two programs on wildly different wavelengths.
