The deal breaks down as follows:
- 2025: $10M
- 2026: $10M
- 2027: $11M
- 2028: $11M
- 2029: $12M
This contract represents a significant increase from the $5.7 million he earned in 2024 ($5.5 million in 2023), making Sanders the highest-paid coach in the Big 12 and one of the top earners nationally.
His new contract will pay him an average of $10.8 million per year, nearly three times the salary of Karl Dorrell, the highest-paid coach in CU history before Sanders' arrival. Dorrell previously earned an average of $3.6 million annually.
Interestingly, just last week, Sanders downplayed the urgency of finalizing an extension.
“I’m not worried about me,” Sanders said when asked about contract negotiations. “Let’s get everybody else straight first, then I’m good.”
It’s clear Sanders was referring to his standout coaching staff. Colorado recently added 10-year NFL veteran Byron Leftwich, who helped lead Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a Super Bowl victory, as the team’s new offensive coordinator.
The Buffs also welcomed Hall of Fame running back Marshall Faulk as their new running backs coach, alongside former NFL linemen Domata Peko (defensive line coach) and Andre Gurode (co-offensive line coach). In addition, defensive coordinator Robert Livingston was rewarded with a significant contract extension, making him the highest-paid assistant in program history.
Coach Prime has built a culture of excellence in Boulder, ensuring that both his staff and players are taken care of. Now, with his long-term future secured, can we finally put the "Deion to the Cowboys" rumors to rest?
We will update this story as more details emerge.
