The Buffaloes and Orange have reportedly filed paperwork with the NCAA, aiming to turn CU’s annual Black & Gold Spring Game into a head-to-head battle at Folsom Field on April 19.
The move would be unprecedented—spring games are typically intrasquad scrimmages, but Sanders wants a true test.
“That’s what I’m trying to do right now, to have it competitive,” Sanders said. “Playing against your own guys kind of gets monotonous.”
Syracuse is on board, with head coach Fran Brown telling reporters, “It’s in the hands of the NCAA right now. We are locked in. Me and Coach Prime, we’re excited.”
While the NFL has long embraced joint practices, the NCAA has yet to allow it at the college level. Even if a waiver is granted, Syracuse would have to juggle travel logistics, as their own spring game is scheduled for April 12.
But make no mistake—this isn’t just about football. Sanders and Brown see an opportunity for more than just a game. “It’s gonna be about financial literacy, it’s gonna be about academics,” Sanders told the NFL Network.
With major programs canceling spring games, CU vs. Syracuse would be must-watch TV. As Brown put it, “It’ll be the main event.”
If the NCAA gives the green light, history will be made in Boulder. Will they? That’s the real question.
