There was always that idea, from the first moment that Deion Sanders stepped foot in Boulder, that he may not be there for long. Now, two years into his tenure as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter are both heading to the NFL and as he always has for his son and superstar mentee, Deion could lead the way.
Coach Prime could be heading back to Dallas, where he played for five seasons from 1995-99 as owner Jerry Jones allowed his now former head coach Mike McCarthy to walk as the rare head coaching free agent after his contract expired. Jones is going after the only star bigger than the one at midfield inside AT&T Stadium and Colorado, which is already losing two superstar players, could be sent into a tailspin.
Still, some Buffs fans, are refusing to accept the reality that is right in front of them; the move that is best for Deion and his family, is always the move he’ll make. With Jones seeming desperate enough to potentially even trade up to draft Shedeur, a family trip to Dallas might be the next step.
Though a move to the NFL, or even a blue-blood college program once Shedeur and Hunter make the jump to the league had been speculated since Coach Prime agreed to the gig at Colorado, Prime was planning for a future in Boulder. Beyond just landing four-star quarterback Julian Lewis out of high school in the 2025 class, Sanders also added Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter out of the transfer portal.
So far, Colorado has assembled a 17-player incoming portal class with a few big-name additions on both sides of the ball. Still, the potential of a Big 12 title and College Football Playoff appearance pales in comparison to an opportunity to coach the Cowboys and the fat check that Jones is likely to write for him to do it.
You better hope he isn’t.
Before Sanders, Colorado’s last winning season was in 2016, a 10-4 campaign under Mike MacIntyre, and before that it was a 7-6 year in 2005 under Gary Barnett, his final season in Boulder. If Coach Prime leaves, it could be another eight years or so before the Buffs recover from a roster that will almost certainly be gutted and a coach who will be hired too late in the cycle to construct a new one.
