Things aren't going well for Colorado early in the game against Houston. The Cougars have looked like the better team, carrying a 10-0 lead through one quarter of play. Houston has dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. Without a semblance of a run game, the Buffs have been forced to put a lot on Ryan Staub in his second career start. He might figure it out, but early returns haven't been kind.
Houston certainly hasn't needed any assistance from the officials, and yet they are getting it anyway. Late in the first quarter, with Houston up 10, Colorado looked to be close to getting a crucial stop. Houston QB Conner Weigman completed a pass to Stephon Johnson on a crossing pattern that gained 28 yards to move the chains on 3rd-and-8.
A flag for offensive pass interference brought it back and made it 3rd-and-23, but a stunning review and overturn of the call turned it into a first down. The 15-yard penalty would have backed Houston up to its own 18-yard line. Instead, the overturn brought the ball all the way into Colorado territory at the 39. That's a 43-yard penalty, for those bad at math.
While the Buffs' defense bowed up and kept Houston out of the endzone, it did ultimately cost them three points with the Cougars connecting on a field goal to take a 13-0 lead.
Watch the video for yourself below. Not sure what the refs were looking at here:
The Refs in the Colorado and Houston game overturned this pass interference call and said no OPI because the ball was caught behind the line of scrimmage tf are we looking at here ? pic.twitter.com/xWBw8egaR6

Colorado fans showed their frustration on social media.
Colorado fans are livid on social media over the overturned PI call vs. Houston

It's baffling that the refs could overturn that call. It seemed rather obvious live.
Zero clue how the refs had any sort of evidence to overturn that in Houston.

They brought in rules analyst and former SEC referee Matt Austin, and both the play-by-play and color analyst on the broadcast thought the call would stand, and there wasn't evidence to overturn it. So, of course, it was overturned.
Buffs already struggling now the refs tryna get us too 😩

Colorado certainly doesn't need any help losing this game so far. It has been a total mismatch since the opening whistle.
hahahaha. sorry to anyone on Colorado, refs fully rigging this game. ignored like 15 holds on Houston, then overturns a huge OPI -- with no decisive angle -- that reverses Houston giving the ball up to them being in the red zone. not even subtle.

It has certainly been a one-sided game from the officials early. Maybe the Buffs will benefit from a makeup call or two later on.
Colorado has not looked like a good football team but the refs just hosed them on that call clear OPI

Regardless of what the officials do, Colorado has to produce on the offensive side of the ball and stop getting pushed around so much up front. If they can't do those things, none of the calls will make a difference.
