Colorado fans aren't laughing at Coach Prime's jokes anymore

There's been quite a bit of coaching turnover already in college football this year, and we haven't even reached November.

Don't expect that turnover to extend into Boulder, at least at head coach, despite the embarrassing defeat last week at the hands of Utah. Deion Sanders still has significant job security after signing a 5-year, $54 million contract extension with an increased buyout after the end of last season. He's not going anywhere unless he chooses to.

Maybe that's why he could still find himself in a bit of a joking mood during his Tuesday press conference, though he'd have to forgive Colorado fans for not joining the laughter too much. There are still four games left, but Colorado's season feels over after Saturday's 46-point shellacking to Utah.

Most Colorado fans still believe in the direction of the program under Coach Prime, though even the most loyal of supporters feel like it's probably time to make changes on the staff, starting with both the offensive and defensive coordinators.

This was still a program that was 1-11 the year before Sanders arrived. One that was in dire straits and far removed from the glory years. But more is now expected after last season's breakthrough and subsequent contract extension.

Sanders isn't on the hot seat, but plenty of other coaches are. We've already seen big-time jobs open at Florida, LSU, and Penn State, among others. Sanders lamented the current state of affairs in coaching with his trademark humor:

“Everyone wants the quick fix, the quick things," Sanders said. "You’ve got mail order brides, too. You can get a BBL, you can come in flat as all know what and leave thick as a snicker. It’s a different country that we live in, we ain’t got patience no more and I don’t either.”

Colorado fans are not in a joking mood

In fairness to Sanders, he's certainly taking things seriously. He mentioned not yet having gone home since arriving back from the trip to Salt Lake City. He's been living in the football facility, hell-bent on getting things right.

But his attempt at humor on Tuesday didn't go over well with Colorado fans.

He corrected himself in a follow-up that he meant "Shurmur" for Pat Shurmur. And it's a fair question that most Buffs fans would like an answer to. Shurmur's play-calling has been bad this year, and Colorado's offense is among the worst in the Big 12 as a result.

It's not a bad answer necessarily, but probably just not the time to give that kind of response.

Everyone laughs when you're winning. But when you're not...

This might be the most damning response - and it's true. Sanders has lived in the Transfer Portal, and doesn't seem to give high school recruiting the attention it deserves. One peek at Colorado's 2026 class will confirm that.

Considering Tuesday is coming to a close - I wouldn't count on any changes this week. But Coach Prime is going to have to make changes this offseason if he wants to stick around long-term in Boulder.
