Colorado football cannot feel accomplished after achieving Deion Sanders' Black and Gold game goal
Deion Sanders declared on April 27 at Folsom Field that Colorado football's goal for the 2024 season was to make a bowl game and win at least six games. The goal was a tribute to 98-year-old superfan Peggy Coppom.
At 4-1 coming off their first bye week, the Buffs are ahead of schedule.
Coach Prime stressed to his players that they haven't achieved anything yet; even after Colorado's most impressive win of the "Prime Time" era against UCF, a 48-21 destruction of the Knights in Orlando.
"Y'all think you arrived, right? Y'all ain't done nothing, man," Sanders said via Well Off Media. "Because if asked me the same thing, they said 'Coach, y'all doing this and that.' We're supposed to be here."
Job's not finished. Four games doesn't get you to a bowl game. The Buffs know that all too well after a promising season in Boulder turned into a disaster by season's end in 2023.
It feels different this time, though. Colorado's best win was against TCU in Week 1 last year, but the Horned Frogs didn't turn out to be much of a challenge. The fashion in which the Buffs beat Baylor and UCF seems to point to a team that can win any game the rest of the season.
They probably won't run the table. A letdown feels inevitable against K-State, Utah, or Texas Tech. Maybe Oklahoma State figures it out by season's end. Or maybe Kansas or Cincinnati plays spoiler.
But there's a serious chance CU is contending for something of note by season's end. That's what it looks like now, anyway. Things could change if the team feels like the job is done, and it may not take long for that to happen.
Colorado football must stay motivated if the Big 12 title is out of reach and a bowl game has been reached
It's easy to imagine the Buffs having completely different motivations once six games have been won. Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter have NFL futures they may be thinking and other players may be eyeing their next move too. Playing in Colorado could increase their values in NIL next year in the portal. Shedeur and Hunter may not be the only pro prospects on the roster.
There could be a lot of looking forward if this team wins enough to qualify for a bowl but loses enough not to be eligible for the College Football Playoff. For all we know, an eight or nine-win Big 12 champion may not win enough to make the 12-team CFP field.
Colorado cannot give up when it appears there's not much to play for. This team has built a rabid fanbase seemingly overnight that spans the entire country.
There's always going to be something to play for.
