Year three of the Coach Prime era in Boulder got off to a disappointing start as Colorado was not able to capitalize on a bevy of early Georgia Tech mistakes, ultimately culminating in a 27-20 loss at home to open the 2025 season.
The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over on all three of their opening possessions of the game. Colorado could only muster a total of seven points off those turnovers. From there, Brent Key's team physically overwhelmed the Buffs at the line of scrimmage and wore them down before Haynes King delivered the knockout blow with a 45-yard touchdown run with just over a minute to play.
There were reasons for optimism, however, and Colorado lost to what is expected to be a pretty good Georgia Tech team.
But one of the most disappointing aspects of the game was Colorado's inability to get the ball into the hands of its playmakers.
Liberty transfer QB Kaidon Salter had an uneven debut, seemingly hamstrung by an offensive coordinator who seemed afraid to let Salter push the ball down the field. Too many screen passes and not nearly enough creativity led to an offense that mustered just a hair over 300 yards.
Two of the most exciting weapons for Deion Sanders' team are Omarion Miller and Incarnate Word transfer RB Dekalon Taylor. Those two combined for five touches on offense against Georgia Tech. An unacceptable failure by the coaching staff.
Taylor carried the ball only once. He caught three passes, one of which went for a touchdown. Miller had one reception - a 39-yard catch in one of the only explosive plays produced by Salter and the Colorado offense all night long.
Delaware should be a "get right" game for Coach Prime and Colorado
Delaware is technically an FBS opponent, but it's their first year at this level. Colorado should have little trouble dispatching the Blue Hens. This should be a "get right" game for the offense. It will give them another opportunity to establish an identity and, hopefully, get the plethora of playmakers on the roster more involved.
It's not just Omarion Miller and Dekalon Taylor, either. It's Dre'lon Miller, Joseph Williams, Hykeem Williams, and Sincere Brown, too.
OC Pat Shurmur and Coach Prime either have to trust Salter to push the ball down the field vertically, or they need to hand the keys to the offense over to freshman phenom Julian Lewis.
This should be the type of game that Lewis gets his first game action in, providing Colorado fans with a glimpse of the future, and potentially the present.
