Faulk, one of the best running backs in football history, broke into coaching for the first time this year when he joined Deion Sanders as Colorado's RBs coach. After finishing dead last in the FBS in rushing last year, the Buffaloes have jumped to 98th this season despite numerous injuries to both the RB room and the offensive line.
Faulk will follow a similar path as Coach Prime. Sanders went from coaching high school football to getting the opportunity at an HBCU at Jackson State.
Reports indicated that Southern officials flew out to Boulder last week to court Faulk for the position. An official announcement is scheduled for Monday.
Marshall Faulk to be named the head coach at Southern University
Faulk is a native of New Orleans and has significant ties to the area. He played his high school football there and then attended San Diego State to play college football because the Aztecs allowed him to play the running back position when most colleges were recruiting him to play corner.
Faulk went on to a legendary NFL career after being a two-time unanimous All-American at San Diego State. Drafted by the Colts, Faulk's best years in the league came with the St. Louis Rams, where he was a 3-time NFL Offensive Player of the Year and 2000 MVP. He also helped lead the Rams to a win in Super Bowl XXXIV.
This is unlikely to be the last staff change for Coach Prime and Colorado this offseason. It just might be the only one that's done via promotion and not Sanders having to make the decision to move on.
It remains to be seen who, but Sanders has promised staff changes are coming once Colorado's season comes to a close on Saturday. Most expect the Buffaloes to be in the market for a new offensive and defensive coordinator, and they could be looking for several new position coaches.
