Dan Patrick isn't sold on Mike Vick being the next Deion Sanders. But he isn't sold on anyone being the next "Coach Prime" either.
During an impassioned speech during his show, Patrick claimed that Sanders is one of a kind and not easily replicated; certainly not by anyone from the NFL world being linked to college coaching jobs or who started coaching in recent years.
"Everybody wants to get the Deion Sanders effect. That’s what North Carolina is hoping for Bill Belichick; you got your Deion. Well no, there’s only one Deion. You can have Eddie George, Eddie George’s a wonderful guy; he’s not Deion. Ed Reed; he’s not Deion. Michael Vick: not Deion...but if you think you’re getting a Deion Sanders, think again," Patrick said, per FOX Sports Radio.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Vick's mutual interest with Sacramento State for him to become the next head coach.
"Sacramento State is in discussions to hire former Pro-Bowl QB Mike Vick as its new head coach, per sources. Sacramento State plans to move up to FBS, is building a new stadium and has over $50 million in NIL. Sacramento State would build an experienced coaching staff around Vick that is inline with the new frontier of college football," Schefter tweeted.
The Virginian-Pilot’s David Teel and Michael Sauls first reported Vick's interest in coaching. Norfolk State reached out to the Newport News native.
“Speaking from his Florida home, Vick told The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press that he has spoken with university president Javaune Adams-Gaston and Spartans athletic director Melody Webb and that he expects resolution ‘soon,’” The Virginian-Pilot duo reported.
“Vick said Norfolk State officials reached out to him and that he is intrigued by the potential opportunity of giving back to the Hampton Roads community that has long supported him.”
Sanders just produced a Heisman winner in Travis Hunter. Being the next Coach Prime is not something anyone could just achieve, because it was an impossibility it happened the first time.
