Among the most intriguing figures in the conversation this offseason is Defensive Coordinator Robert Livingston, who, after receiving interest from NFL teams, made the decision to stick with Coach Prime and the Buffs for another season.
So, what made him stay in Boulder?
In the post-practice press conference this afternoon, Livingston opened up about his decision, and the message was clear: loyalty, gratitude, and the belief in what’s being built at Colorado.
"I’m very loyal," Livingston stated, a sentiment that can’t be overstated. It’s no surprise that after a successful stint as the Buffs' defensive coordinator in 2024, with a defense that improved week-by-week, NFL teams took notice. But despite the tempting offers from the league, Livingston’s decision came down to something much deeper than money or status.
“This is a phenomenal place, and I’m thrilled to be here,” Livingston said with a genuine sense of pride. His loyalty to Coach Prime, the program, and the vision they’re building together clearly weighs heavily on his heart. The Buffs are entering a new era under Coach Prime, and Livingston’s role in this transformation is pivotal.
Livingston’s decision to stay was also about the impact the program has had on his life and his family. When asked about the financial security and recognition he received—being named the highest-paid assistant in CU history—Livingston responded with humble gratitude.
“They gave me a chance, and that’s never lost on me,” he said. “They changed my life, they changed my family's life, so it’s my job to not let them down.”
Let’s be real—we are thrilled that Livingston is still in Boulder. The guy is an elite defensive mind, and his presence on the staff gives Colorado a major advantage heading into the 2025 season.
But make no mistake—Livingston won’t be a coordinator forever. He’s got "future head coach" written all over him, and it’s only a matter of time before he gets his shot to lead a program.
