Deiondra Sanders reveals how Coach Prime shaped her life on and off the field

Deiondra described a man who demanded excellence, leaned on his faith, and always stood by her during difficult times, never wavering in his support even when life felt heaviest.

For most people, growing up with a father like Colorado coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders would make his larger-than-life status impossible to ignore.

For Deiondra Sanders, it took much longer.

Appearing on Lecrae’s The Deep End podcast, Sanders revealed that she didn’t fully appreciate the magnitude of her father’s football career until his Hall of Fame induction weekend.

“I really didn’t realize who my daddy was until his Hall of Fame weekend,” she said.

Despite spending her childhood around professional sports, celebrity-filled suites and constant travel, Sanders said those experiences felt normal because they were simply part of her everyday life. It wasn’t until she watched highlights of her father’s career and witnessed the reaction he received from fans during Hall of Fame festivities that the realization hit.

“My daddy really is him,” she recalled thinking.

The conversation also included a Colorado connection. Lecrae revealed that he first met Deiondra during one of Coach Prime’s games and immediately noticed how comfortable she was in an environment that would overwhelm most people.

“I did meet you the first time at your pop’s game when he was coaching,” Lecrae said. “It was so many celebrities on the sidelines.”

For Deiondra, however, it was just another day around her father.

One of the more revealing moments came when Sanders explained why she never pursued athletics the way her younger brothers did. While she laughed about it, she credited her father’s intense competitive standards for pushing her away from sports.

“My dad took the fun out of it…You scored 10 points but you missed two…We’re going to be running tomorrow.”

While she admitted that approach worked for her brothers, including Shedeur Sanders and Shilo Sanders, she said it had the opposite effect on her.

“Daddy, I don’t even want to do this anymore.”

Faith also played a major role in her memories of growing up with Sanders. She recalled attending church every Sunday during visits with her father and said he frequently encouraged his children to memorize scripture.

“We started going to church every Sunday…We were there faithfully.”

She also remembered Sanders making his children memorize Bible verses after his well-documented spiritual transformation.

Deiondra admitted she feared how her father would react when news of her pregnancy became public. Instead, she found a more understanding response than expected because Sanders knew how much becoming a mother meant to her. Ultimately, he's more than embraced the role of Papa Prime!

“My dad knew the issues I had with fibroids and stuff like that…He knew I always wanted a family…He actually wasn’t as mad as I thought he would be.”

According to Deiondra, her brothers were far more upset than her father, largely because they were protective of her and unhappy with how she had been treated in her relationship.

Looking back, she described Coach Prime as someone who never hesitated to tell her the truth, even when it wasn’t what she wanted to hear.

“My dad is the type that even if he doesn't like it, if it’s something I like, he’s going to support it…He's going to tell me what it is from the beginning…But he’ll support it just because he wants me to be happy.”

For Colorado fans accustomed to seeing Sanders on the sidelines, the interview offered a different perspective, not the Hall of Fame cornerback, baseball player or Buffaloes head coach, but a father whose influence continues to shape his children long after the games are over.
