The University of Colorado has a rich football history, filled with legendary names, but for every household name, there are a few former Buffs who once made headlines but have since faded from the spotlight.

Let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit five CU football players you may have forgotten.

1. Bobby Pesavento (2000–2001)

When CU went on its magical 2001 run, most people remember Chris Brown running all over Nebraska. But it was Bobby Pesavento who stepped up at quarterback when Craig Ochs went down with an injury. Pesavento led CU to a Big 12 title and an appearance in the Fiesta Bowl, carving his place in Buffs history. He may not be a household name, but without him, that special 2001 season might have looked a lot different.

2. Hugh Charles (2004–2007)

CU has had its share of electric running backs, and Hugh Charles was one of them. Though he played during a rocky time for the program, Charles was a bright spot. He rushed for over 2,500 yards in his career and was known for his breakaway speed. While he never got the national recognition of some other CU backs, his contributions shouldn’t be overlooked.

3. Jimmy Smith (2006–2010)

Smith may not have been a big name in college, but he became one of the better NFL cornerbacks in the last decade. A first-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2011, Smith played 11 seasons and helped Baltimore win Super Bowl XLVII. In Boulder, he was a lockdown corner who quietly dominated, but his impact was felt more at the next level.

4. Nelson Spruce (2011–2015)

Spruce was a walking highlight reel in the early 2010s, breaking multiple CU and Pac-12 receiving records. He finished his career with a staggering 294 receptions, cementing himself as one of the most productive receivers in conference history. After a few stints in the NFL and XFL, Spruce faded from the football world, but Buffs fans will never forget his sure hands and clutch performances.

5. Sefo Liufau (2013–2016)

Sefo Liufau was the heart and soul of CU’s 2016 resurgence, leading the Buffs to their first Pac-12 South title. A tough and gritty quarterback, he set numerous school records, including career passing yards and total offense. Injuries slowed his pro chances, but his leadership and toughness during CU’s "Rise is Real" should never be forgotten.

These five Buffs may not be the first names that come to mind when reminiscing about CU football, but each of them played a key role in shaping the program’s history. Who else deserves a spot on this list?
