Watching the 2025 Colorado Buffaloes this season, we've all noticed something that opposing coaches are starting to just flat-out say: Colorado’s offense has zero effectiveness right now.
This week, Wyoming's Jay Sawvel put it plainly with, “I don’t know that they alter their offense dramatically.”
Hearing that was frustrating. Pat Shurmur’s system is predictable. And for Buffs fans who lived through his run as Broncos OC, this is a painful deja vu.
Now, Colorado (1-2) enters Saturday night’s sold-out Family Weekend showdown against Wyoming with more questions than answers. The Cowboys come in 2-1, not exactly an offensive powerhouse, but scrappy enough to make you nervous if CU’s play-calling stays stuck in neutral.
Still, a white-out Folsom Field will be rocking for Ralphie VII’s debut run, and there’s no denying the Buffs have the talent to win this game. So let’s make three bold predictions for Colorado vs. Wyoming:
1. Tawfiq Byard sparks the defense with an interception
If there’s a bright spot early, it’s been the play of Safety Tawfiq Byard. After transferring from South Florida, he’s been flying around — including a 14-tackle night at Houston last week. He’s due to make a momentum-shifting play, and Wyoming’s young QB Kaden Anderson is the perfect target.
The Cowboys have already coughed up multiple turnovers this year. With Byard roaming the back end, this feels like the game where he finally gets his first pick as a Buff, setting the tone for a defense that desperately needs a big night.

2. Kaidon Salter holds QB1… but JuJu Lewis steals the spotlight
Through two starts, Kaidon Salter has been steady, not spectacular. He’s completed 68% of his passes, tossed one TD, and added two more on the ground. Against Delaware, he looked comfortable, but against Georgia Tech, the offense has not been impressive.
This is the night Salter proves he’s QB1 material — but don’t be shocked when freshman phenom JuJu Lewis gets a series and electrifies the crowd. I’m calling it now: JuJu finds the end zone on a designed red-zone package.
For Shurmur, the question is whether he’ll open the playbook enough to let their different skill sets shine. Fans are begging for it.
3. Joseph Williams breaks 100 Yards receiving
Quietly, Joseph Williams has been one of Colorado’s most consistent weapons. After a 52-yard, one-touchdown outing at Houston, he’s sitting at 117 yards on the season. With defenses keying in on Sincere Brown or Omarion Miller, Williams feels primed to take advantage of single coverage.
I’m predicting Williams posts his first 100-yard game of the year against Wyoming, giving Salter (and maybe JuJu) a true go-to target for big plays.

The Bottom Line
Colorado fans are restless, and rightly so. It’s maddening to watch an offense that looks stuck in reverse. Saturday night is a chance to give the Buffs some momentum.
Ralphie VII will storm the field for the first time, bringing tradition and energy back to Folsom. The crowd will be loud, and the Buffs have no excuse to come out flat.
The question is if Colorado can even beat Wyoming — which some fans are not sure of — but also whether the Buffs will finally show us an offense that can be effective in the Big 12 Conference.
Score Prediction: Colorado 31, Wyoming 21
